Who We Are

We are best friends with diverse backgrounds and skillsets, who came together with a shared vision: to live by our principles and empower others to do the same. United by timing and the conditions of recent world events, we each turned away from secure opportunities that conflicted with our values, sparking a shared vision to build something meaningful - a business rooted in a philosophy of taking responsibility for ourselves and inspiring others to do the same.

Kevin and Chris met as students in a Permaculture Design Course taught by Takota Coen in 2020. They started working together as the first employees of a new company co-founded by Takota. When that company’s direction conflicted with our values, the three of us made the bold decision to leave together and create Building Your Homestead - where we could pursue our passion and purpose without compromise.

We believe that the best way to create change is by taking responsibility for ourselves, our families, and the land we steward, while stepping away from the systems that no longer serve us. By designing and building properties that align with our values, we help create lives filled with purpose and connection. Through Building Your Homestead, we provide mentorship, resources, and guidance to help like-minded individuals and families create thriving homesteads. For us, this isn’t just a way of life - it’s a movement toward a better world.

Takota is the visionary leader behind Building Your Homestead, bringing decades of expertise in construction, regenerative agriculture, and holistic system design. As the co-owner of Coen Farm, a 250-acre permaculture farm, Takota has pioneered innovative ways to integrate nature's principles into thriving, resilient, and profitable homesteads. His teaching and mentorship inspires clients to think critically, embrace interdependence, and build systems that are as beautiful as they are functional. A natural problem solver, Takota excels at transforming complex challenges into actionable plans, empowering families to take control of their land and their future.

Kevin Eidick

Designer and Co-Founder
Kevin is the creative architect of Building Your Homestead, specializing in crafting landscapes that blend aesthetics, functionality, and ecological resilience. As a professional Landscape Architect and permaculture designer, Kevin uses his extensive design experience to help clients unlock the potential of their land. His keen eye for detail and thoughtful approach to land use ensures every design is both practical and beautiful. Whether it's reimagining an underutilized space or implementing large-scale earthworks, Kevin's work reflects a deep commitment to creating harmony between people and nature.

Chris kay

Mentor and Co-Founder
Chris is the strategic coordinator of Building Your Homestead, overseeing key areas of the business-from sales and marketing to client onboarding and business development. With a diverse background in sports and recreation, tourism, coaching, financial markets, and business development, Chris brings a systems-thinking approach to his work. His broad experience complements the specialized expertise of the other co-founders. By focusing on identifying ideal clients and deeply understanding their goals, Chris helps transform aspirations into thriving homesteads that reflect each client’s unique vision.
